White Clover Seed

One of the most common legumes in Ireland today is White Clover. A notable feature of the species is its creeping growth. This helps to fill in gaps in the sward as it puts down roots at each node. Varieties of White Clover can be categorised by leaf sizes (small, medium, large).

It is best suited to soil fertility of P/h 6.3> and a minimum of index 3. A sowing rate of 1-2kg on fresh reseed and 2-3kg when overseeding. Springtime is best suited for overseeding when there is still large amounts of moisture in the soil and temperature of 8 degrees or above.

The field should be tine or chain harrowed and rolled after seeding. It should then be grazed after 10 days and covered at 1200 for a minimum of 3 grazings. It is also important the new crop receives large amounts of large.

Clover seed can also been sown on covers of 1500> the day prior to grazing and then livestock complete the rest of the work. This method of reseeding is known as tooth and hoof.
